Reading the newspaper last week, I was shocked and thrilled to see a huge front page photo of a 1962 Flying Cloud. Of course, I hungrily read the story about John Byfield and Kate Heber, who are traveling around the country promoting green living in their eco-friendly Airstream. Their beautiful silver home on wheels has solar panels and a composting toilet, and is gorgeously finished in fast-growing, renewable bamboo flooring and other natural materials. John and Kate bought their trailer about a year ago, and worked full time on renovating it to reflect their desire to live in harmony with the planet. Now they hope it will be an inspiration to others.
The best part of all was that the story said the Airstreamers were visiting my neighborhood! So, you can guess what I did, can't you? I went Airstream hunting, of course! Down every street, peering up every driveway, until I found that shiny silver testament to preservation at the very end of the last street in town.
John and Kate were warm and friendly, graciously opening their trailer to us, even though it was dinner time. Here's a peek inside:
Visit their
website for more photos and information and be sure to follow them on their
blog, too.
They named their trailer Doris Mae, in honor of Kate's mom, who believed that anything's possible if you believe in your dreams. Given that, I knew Doris Mae and Stella have alot in common, so I was thrilled when they came over to meet my little Caravel last night, before they left for the east coast.
John and Kate, (and Doris Mae), are doing good work while on the adventure of a lifetime. I wish them safe journeys and lots of Airstream love.
